What will we learn?

The 7 topics that we cover with most groups:

What makes up soil?

What makes up soil?

What makes up soil?

  1.  Understanding the different components of soil and what is their normal percentage of the soil.
  2. What factors can impact the different components of the soil and their relative percentages to each other.

Soils Basics

What makes up soil?

What makes up soil?

  1. There are many different Soils and rough number in South Dakota
  2. Capabilities of Soils are different, just like people
  3. Properties that affect soil productivity
  4. Understanding why soil capabilities is critical for wise land use planning
  5. Must care for our Soils - Apple Exercise

Soil Health Basics

What makes up soil?

Soil Health Basics

Five Principles of Soil Health, all related to Human health:

  1. Keep the Soil covered
  2. Disturb the soil the least possible
  3. Increase Diversity in what is growing in and on the soil
  4. Keep a living root in the soil all the time you can
  5. Incorporate livestock of all types

The Soil is Alive

Rainfall and infiltration in the soil

Soil Health Basics

  1. While every soil has some life in it, healthy soils have more.
  2. In a handful of healthy soil, there are as many organisms as there are people on the entire Earth. Will be demonstrated with several interactive activities

Rainfall and infiltration in the soil

Rainfall and infiltration in the soil

Rainfall and infiltration in the soil

  1. How much water falls when we get rain.
  2. What are the possible paths for water to take when it falls to the earth?
  3. When rainfall is infiltrated, the soil does so much to keep the water clean.
  4. This will be demonstrated with the “edible infiltration” exercise.
  5. We will also perform a demonstration comparing several different soils to demo the differences.

Grasslands: Why They Matter

Rainfall and infiltration in the soil

Rainfall and infiltration in the soil

  1. We will discuss grasslands, how many were in SD when settled and how many today.
  2. We will demonstrate the root system of a healthy grassland and all it does for the soil.
  3. Our grasslands are home to so much biodiversity.
  4. What are the threats to our grasslands?
  5. Talk about successional forces at work on grasslands and how we have limited some successional forces and how they impact grasslands.

Birds and Pollinators

Birds and Pollinators

Birds and Pollinators

  1. We discuss the importance of grasslands to many bird and pollinator species.
  2. We share the impact that grassland loss is having on many bird and pollinator species.
  3. We talk about the key things producers are to doing to make their grasslands healthy and thus beneficial to birds and pollinators.

Other Possible Topics:

How Soil is formed

Soil Sampling, Describing a soil and mapping of soils in an area.

  •  Each cycle will be quickly reviewed.

Species interactions in an ecosystem

Careers in various fields that would involve all these topics.

Discussion of Nitrogen, Carbon, Phosphorus and Water Cycles

  1. How do they compete for limited resources?
  2. How does succession impact species richness, biomass, and productivity
  3. Biodiversity; what is it and how does it vary in different ecosystems.
